I also built a custom mudroom storage system with a floating bench to give my family space to still store their outdoor items and shoes! I made this custom storage system using ¾” birch plywood and created my floating bench the same way I created my floating desk!Īnd that accent wall!? I was feeling super inspired by my friends at Urban Wall Design and their incredible work! So, I channeled that energy into this accent wall ( here’s a similar project I made with the same technique)!Īs a weekend warrior, I had to juggle this transformation with my full time job. To give my dad a streamlined space to work, I build him an l-shaped desk ( you can find the build details for that here)!

Here’s how I made it happen! But, with work from home culture still going strong, my dad was feeling a bit bummed that his space was so cluttered. Enjoy (and, you know, don’t track any dirt in the house).I recently got a chance to renovate my parent’s guest room and turn it into a combination guest space and home office for my mom. Here are three different scenarios and details about the design and construction of mud and laundry rooms. And for all that, it gets very little credit (until now). For a young family, the mud and laundry room might just be the hardest working room in the house. But if children are in the picture, the space takes the full range of tasks such as drop sort, locker room (for losing the dirty sports gear before entering the house), gear storage, sorting, washing, and keeping the dirt confined. If the homeowners don’t have kids (or if they've grown up and moved out) the space can be streamlined and minimal. The primary design factor for most mud and laundry rooms is children. While often dismissed as mere service space, we’d like to point out that these rooms are only ugly when architects don’t design them thoughtfully. No doubt, it’s on the duller side of design coverage, but when you’ve got to put pencil to paper (or mouse click to screen) it’s helpful to have guidelines, drawings, specs, and photos of the real deal-even if it’s just the laundry room. We’ve been seeing a trend for several years now, as the mud and laundry room ups its status.
